Hothouse Ceramics

When the nine-to-five grind is wearing you down you might fantasise of freeing yourself from the confines of a regular salary, but few of us ever find ourselves actually living the dream. Not for us at Hothouse ceramics. A few years ago we were both working in demanding careers, Lesley in commercial textile design and Terry in engineering sales. Now we spend our days in our gallery/pottery in the delightful surroundings of the award-winning Sudbury Courtyard working with clay and chatting to visitors to our gallery. Lesley switched her creative skills from textiles to ceramics more than eleven years ago and Terry changed from engineering 4 years ago. Lesley works with porcelain clay and prefers to hand build, creating a range of wall art, decorative vessels and jewellery, whilst Terry enjoys throwing functional stoneware on the wheel.

Falstaffs of Sudbury

Falstaffs of Sudbury are an independent bespoke gin, spirits, beer and cider shop. They specialise in gins from the local area and small distilleries from around the UK. They have a selection of beers and ciders from the local area also. Above their shop they also have a preloved book shop with space to hold gin tasting events for small groups.

Sudbury Parish

The manor of Sudbury is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the early 16th century, the village of Sudbury became the property of the Vernon family, when Ellen Montgomery married Sir John Vernon (d.1545).

Sudbury Hall

Shortly after the restoration of King Charles II, George Vernon (1536 – 1702) started building Sudbury Hall, and at the same time, a new estate village. The heart of Sudbury has changed relatively little since the late 17th century, with the Main Road, the former Estate Office and the Vernon Arms coaching inn, still in use today.

Later additions to the village include the village school, which was built in the 1830s, and the village shop, built in 1900. The Gasworks was built in 1874, by notable architect George Devey, and provided gas to Sudbury Hall until the 1930s.
