October Update From The Gasworks
It has been a busy October here at The Gasworks. Here is our monthly update to keep you up to date with what’s going on and what’s coming up.
Restoration Update
At the time of writing we have just completed week 32 of 49. This week it was fantastic to see more of the scaffolding dropped, to reveal the amazing details and features of the building, once again, as well as highlighting the quality workmanship of H.A.Briddon Ltd.
The foundations for the glazed link – which connects the existing building to the new Main Hall – were also laid, so watch this space for more developments in coming weeks!
It was great to be able offer some last minute training sessions for those who wanted to know more about the process of torching. This is where lime mortar is applied to the underside of the tiles to keep them in place and prevent strong winds from lifting them. Nearly all old roofs were lime torched, but we particularly think this would have been the case at Sudbury Gasworks because of it being a fire-proof construction.
Many thanks to heritage roofer and trainer, Richard Jordan, and Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust for running these on our behalf.
